Biography

Dr. Barry McCarty is Professor of Rhetoric and Communication and Chair of the Hans Denck School of Communication at Truett McConnell University. He was graduated from Mid-Atlantic Christian University with a BS in Christian ministries, from Abilene Christian University with an MA in Speech Communication, and from the University of Pittsburgh with a PhD in Rhetoric and Argumentation. His communication skills have been honed by over four decades of leadership in pastoral ministry, higher education, non-profit management, and public service. Before joining the Truett faculty, he taught public speaking, debate, preaching, and logic at the University of Pittsburgh, Mid-Atlantic Christian University, Pointe University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Cincinnati Christian University, where he also served as president. During the Reagan administration he was chairman of the North Carolina Republican Convention and a delegate to the Republican National Convention. He also served by appointment of the Governor as chairman of the North Carolina Social Services Commission. Since 1986 Dr. McCarty has been the Chief Parliamentarian who advises and assists the presidents of the Southern Baptist Convention as they preside over the SBC annual meetings. In between a couple of seasons of life in academia, he served for 22 years in pastoral ministry.
