About This Program
The Middle Grades Education program at Truett McConnell University prepares teacher candidates to effectively teach students in grades 4–8 with a strong emphasis on both content knowledge and developmentally responsive instruction. Candidates select a concentration in either English Language Arts/Social Studies or Math/Science, allowing them to develop depth in their content area while learning best practices for engaging young adolescents. The program combines rigorous coursework with extensive field experiences, providing meaningful opportunities to apply instructional strategies, classroom management, and assessment practices in real classrooms. Grounded in a Christ-centered worldview, the program equips graduates to support the academic, social, and emotional needs of middle grades learners while fostering a positive and impactful classroom environment.

Candidates complete extensive field experiences throughout their program, gaining more than 1,000 hours of classroom experience before graduation. From early observation placements to senior-year residencies and student teaching, candidates are actively engaged in real-world educational settings that allow them to apply instructional strategies, classroom management skills, assessment practices, and differentiated instruction in authentic learning environments.
