America was founded by those seeking freedom of opportunity and worship. The History of the American Revolution and Early Republic course chronicles the emergence of America from its Colonial antecedents through the struggles resulting in independence and nationhood. Lectures, reading, and research focus on the individuals who made this success possible: the contributions of Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Revere shape the narrative in one of the most exciting eras of US history. The History of The American Constitution course picks up the narrative with a close look at the events leading up to the Constitutional Convention and the framing of the great document in 1787, examining the elements of the Constitution and its interpretation through our history. Students learn about landmark cases in the broad areas of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties: Brown v. the Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, Engel v. Vitale and Texas v. Johnson dealt with issues which even today challenge us to understand our Constitutional heritage and our Christian faith.
-
Freedom does not just appear. It must be grappled with in the halls of government and achieved, defended and maintained on the battlefield and in the courtroom. TMU’s history students explore the beginnings of freedom in the course on the American Revolution and the Early Republic. A new birth of freedom is explored in Civil War and Reconstruction. Era of the World Wars delves into the War to Make the World Safe for Democracy (World War I) and the global conflict against tyranny (World War II). The Cold War, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam are featured in Modern America. Freedom is never free – it must be vigilantly defended in times of peace and war.
-
Beginning with the Atomic Age and the developing Cold War, Modern America relates the challenging times of the search for peace at home and abroad. The course captures the turbulent era of Civil Rights, anti-war sentiment with the Vietnam Conflict, and a growing cultural polarity. The American Presidency examines the lives of the men who lead our nation and the impact of their administrations on American history. The Women’s History: First Ladies course applies a Proverbs 31 template in evaluation the Presidential spouses from this and previous eras.
